3000 ans avant notre ère les Egyptiens utilisaient déjà des onguents et des huiles parfumées et maquillaient leur visage et leur corps à l'aide de différents colorants :

Sur le visage, on applique des fards jaunâtres, verdâtres et bleuâtres ; les veines sont dessinées au fard bleu ; l'œil se doit d'être cerné jusqu'à la pommette. Heureusement, cette tendance morbide passe et le maquillage fait une avancée spectaculaire : les fards gras de jadis laissent la place à une
version sèche.

Les années 1990 : vers un maquillage naturel. La tendance s'axe désormais vers des produits « pour une beauté naturelle ». Les ampoules et gélules font aussi leur apparition,
pour agir de l'intérieur. Et si le maquillage n'est pas encore largement utilisé par les hommes, une ligne de soins est lancée pour eux en 1985 par L'Oréal. 1990s: towards a natural make-up.
